‘Basics – Marble’ consists of graphite drawings on Mylar. Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of limestone. The typical inclusions one sees are remains of algae, shells, corals, plants and micro-creatures. The drawings were made in Berlin during several summers while I was living there. I traced the marble and stucco marble/scagliola walls of four Art Nouveau buildings, which have come unscathed through time – whilst there were all those atrocities around. They have outlived the Empire, two World Wars, and the division of the city up to the Reunification. I have traced all the walls of the 4 buildings from the entrance and -if existent- up to the top floors.

Marmor ist ein Gestein, welches durch Metamorphose von Kalkstein und anderen Gesteinen im Erdinnern durch Hitze und Druck entstanden ist. Die im Marmor sichtbaren Einschlüsse oder Äderungen sind millionenalte Reste von Algen, Muscheln, Korallen, Pflanzen und Kleinstgetier. Die Zeichnungen sind über mehrere Jahre hindurch in Berlin-Charlottenburg in vier Jugendstilhäusern entstanden, welche unversehrt durch die Zeit gekommen sind. Sie haben Kaiserreich, zwei Weltkriege, die Teilung der Stadt und die Wende überlebt. Ich habe deren Marmorwände (echtes Marmor sowie Stuckmarmor) vom Eingangsbereich -und sofern vorhanden- bis vier Stockwerke hinauf abgezeichnet.

Diese Zeichnungen knüpfen an eine frühere Serie an, die ich 2004/2006 am Istituto Svizzero/Palazzo Trevisan in Venedig von 36 x 36 cm Marmor Bodenplatten gemacht hatte. Ich hatte indes nur deren Risse, Abschläge und Flecken nachgezeichnet.

The first marble drawing project was realized in Venice (2004 – 2007) at the former Istituto Svizzero where I tried to record the history of the marble floor tiles by tracing their fissures, cracks and marks.
